Our World, Background Briefings - Gerry Engwerda

  • Yackandandah Community Centre 29 High Street Yackandandah, VIC, 3749 Australia (map)

Yack resident, Gerry Engwerda has a host of information and knowledge to share, his briefings examine current affairs, what is happening in the world and how that might impact on us.

We will be trialing a new format to these sessions.

The one hour talk but it will be preceded by a 20 - 25-minute round up of what is making news around the world along with a bit of commentary to put it in perspective.

Obviously, this will make the session a little longer at 1 ½ hours (maximum) instead there will be a 10 minute break in the middle so that people can stretch their legs and have a bit of a breather.

DIARY DATE: put this coming Friday 2:00pm on 2 September at the Community Centre in your diary

TOPIC: The Pacific

In this session we will look at the early settlement and exploration of the Pacific. How did World War II and the subsequent nuclear testing programs during the Cold War impact the peoples of the region? Can we really consider the South pacific and Papua New Guinea to be our backyard or do we only take an interest in it when someone else does? Just what are the priorities for those who live there, how do they avoid becoming the meat in the sandwich as larger powers compete for influence and how does that fit in with our strategic interests?

Put this event in your diary and let your friends know about this interesting topic.
