Yackandandah has a dedicated group of emergency services agencies. The SES and CFA are made up by community volunteers and welcome new members (in any capacity).”

What can you do to prepare and ensure you are safe?

Get to know the CFA Website http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/
It provides extensive information on warnings and restrictions, planning and preparing with links to useful brochures such as “Your Guide to Survival”, and “Your Guide to Property Preparation.” Printed brochures are available at the fire station. The Brigade also holds Open Days and Information Sessions.

Common questions

What should I do if I see smoke, flames or embers?

Dial 000. If the fire has already been reported or is a registered prescribed burn or burn off the operators will let you know. You can also check the VicEmergency Incidents Map.

How do I find out what is happening if there is a fire in the area?

Your main sources of information are your local ABC radio, VicEmergency website (emergency.vic.gov.au) or app, the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226, and social media Twitter @CFA_updates and facebook.com/cfavic

Will a fire truck turn up at my place?

While the CFA will make every effort to protect lives and property, we may not be able to get to your place. During a large bushfire we will not have enough trucks or people to be at every property under threat. It is your responsibility to ensure a large fire truck can access your driveway.

How will I know whether I should stay and defend or leave?

Your Bushfire Plan should cover both options. Know your “trigger” for leaving. Use the daily Fire Danger Rating for the North East region, CFA warnings and weather conditions to make informed decisions. CFA’s brochure “Your Guide to Survival” has more information.

What does it mean if I hear the siren?

The siren MAY sound to alert firefighters or to indicate that a current emergency has been identified in the local area and people should seek further information immediately.

What are Community Fireguard Groups?

The CFA Community Fireguard program is based on small groups of people, often neighbours, who take responsibility for their own fire safety by working together. The program covers local fire history, how to prepare your property and a Bushfire Plan. Yackandandah has several groups. Contact
